Who is A. A. Milne?

Alan Alexander Milne (1882 to 1956) is remembered the world over for one bear. The English writer was primarily a playwright, and a successful one, until the enormous popularity of Winnie-the-Pooh and his children’s poetry eclipsed everything else. He also served in both world wars – as a lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the First, and as a captain in the Home Guard in the Second.

The stories began at home. His son Christopher Robin Milne, later a bookseller, was the model for the fictional Christopher Robin, and the spark came on a visit to London Zoo, where the boy fell for a tame and amiable bear named Winnipeg. Milne left the original Pooh manuscripts to the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he had studied – a fitting home for a national treasure.

Pooh in audio is one of the purest pleasures in children’s listening – and, if we are honest, in grown-up listening too. These are stories Milne first spun for his own son, and that intimacy survives every retelling. Our catalogue offers Winnie-the-Pooh itself alongside Winnie-The-Pooh: The Complete BBC Collection, a generous option for families who want the bear’s world gathered in one place.

For British listeners there is a particular satisfaction in hearing a homegrown classic the way it was surely meant to be shared: out loud, at bedtime, no screen in sight. Start children young on this one; they will not outgrow it, and neither will you.
