Benji Waterhouse, born in 1984, is an English consultant psychiatrist who is also a stand-up comedian and author – a combination rare enough to raise an eyebrow, and exactly the right CV for writing honestly about mental health care, the field in which he has made his name.
British medicine has produced a steady line of doctor-writers, and Waterhouse belongs to it, but the stand-up training is what sets him apart: it takes genuine skill to write about psychiatry in a way that is funny without being flippant, and humane without turning pious. His double life gives him a vantage point few medical writers can claim.
