Who is David Annandale?

David Annandale is a Canadian speculative fiction author, born in 1967, who has kept one foot planted firmly in the academy throughout his writing life. He took a BA and an MA at the University of Manitoba, added a PhD from the University of Alberta, and teaches at Manitoba to this day.

To genre readers, though, he is known for something considerably darker and considerably more fun: a large body of fiction for the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where his name has become a dependable mark of grim, atmospheric storytelling. He is also a regular contributor to The Skiffy and Fanty Show podcast, appearing as its resident Kaiju Whisperer – contributions that helped earn the show two Hugo nominations for Best Fancast, in 2014 and again in 2021.

Annandale sits in our catalogue with Apostle, and his track record tells you broadly what to expect: darkness handled with total conviction. Writers who make their name in Warhammer 40,000 fiction learn to manage vast stakes and creeping dread without blinking, and those instincts serve audio storytelling particularly well – atmosphere counts double when the book is in your ears.

For UK listeners who like their speculative fiction at the pitch-black end of the spectrum, this is a sensible place to start: a professional’s professional, an academic who understands exactly how genre machinery works and clearly enjoys operating it at full throttle.
