Derren Brown (born 27 February 1971) is an English mentalist, illusionist and writer – a self-described psychological illusionist whose act has always carried an unusual ethical edge. Much of his work is designed to expose the methods of those who claim genuinely supernatural powers, faith healers and mediums included, and he is open about achieving his effects through psychology, showmanship, magic, misdirection and suggestion.
He began performing in 1992 and made his television debut with Mind Control in 2000. The stage work that followed collected serious silverware: two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment across Something Wicked This Way Comes and Svengali, a BAFTA for The Experiments, and a Broadway debut with Secret in 2019. Alongside the performing he has written steadily, for fellow magicians and for the general public alike.
