Who is E.K. Johnston?

E.K. Johnston publishes under initials and works, when she is not writing, as a forensic archaeologist. That is not a novelist’s affectation. Born Emily Kate Johnston in Huron East, Ontario, she took a degree in Near Eastern archaeology, studied biblical Hebrew and Arabic, and spent six summers on excavation sites in Jordan before applying the same discipline to crime scene recovery.

The habit of reading fragments and reconstructing a life from them carries straight into her fiction. She writes for young adults with a strong sense of place and an unusual patience for the silences between characters, ranging from the small-town Ontario dragon slayers of The Story of Owen to the difficult, tender territory of Exit, Pursued by a Bear.

Lucasfilm noticed. She has written several Star Wars novels since, among them a trilogy built around Padme Amidala, and readers who arrived for the franchise tend to stay for the prose. She has also lived on four continents, which may go some way towards explaining how easily her books travel.
