Who is Erich von Däniken?

Erich von Däniken, born in 1935, was a Swiss author and one of the most contested figures in popular publishing. His books claimed that extraterrestrials shaped early human culture, and Chariots of the Gods?, published in 1968, turned that idea into a global bestseller; more than anyone else, Däniken popularised the ancient astronauts hypothesis. He went on to co-found a research association devoted to the theme and designed Mystery Park, a theme park at Interlaken in Switzerland. He died in January 2026.

Honesty demands the other half of the story. Virtually all scientists and academics reject his claims outright, classing the work as pseudohistory, pseudoarchaeology and pseudoscience, and early in his career he was convicted of fraud and embezzlement, writing one of his books while serving the sentence. None of it ended his popularity – if anything, the outsider status became part of the brand.
