Who is Florence Scovel Shinn?

Florence Scovel Shinn (1871 to 1940) was an American artist and book illustrator who, in her middle years, reinvented herself as a New Thought spiritual teacher and metaphysical writer. That second act is the one posterity remembers: in New Thought circles she is best known for her first book, The Game of Life and How to Play It, published in 1925.

Her philosophy centred on the power of the word. As she framed it, invisible forces are forever at work in a person’s life, with each of us pulling the strings ourselves without knowing it, and whatever we give voice to, we begin to attract. Agree or not, it is an idea with a long reach, and listeners will recognise its echo in a great deal of self-help writing since.

Our catalogue carries The Complete Works of Florence Scovel Shinn, which gathers her writing in one place – the sensible way to meet a thinker of her kind. There is an obvious fit between her method and the format: a philosophy built on the vibratory power of the spoken word, actually spoken aloud. British listeners who approach New Thought with a raised eyebrow will still find her worth hearing as a period voice – direct, confident and briskly practical in tone. Take the metaphysics or leave it; the conviction, and the economy, are the point.
