Who is Gabor Maté?

A retired Canadian physician who has spent his career arguing that medicine looks at symptoms and misses lives, Gabor Maté was born in Budapest in 1944 and survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary as an infant. His family emigrated to Canada after the 1956 uprising. He practised for years as a family doctor, then in palliative care, then spent more than a decade working with addiction and mental illness among the residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

That last posting shaped the thinking he is now known for. In In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts he treated addiction not as a moral failure but as an attempt at relief from pain, and in When the Body Says No he pressed the case that suppressed emotion carries a physiological bill.

He is a contested figure in some clinical circles and an unusually trusted one among readers who have felt unheard by their own doctors. His talks fill halls on several continents.

The book that distils all of this is here: The Myth of Normal, an eighteen hour examination of trauma, illness and healing in what he calls a toxic culture. Written with his son Daniel Maté, it gathers four decades of clinical observation into a single argument about why so much of what we treat as normal is quietly making us ill.

Daniel Maté also narrates, and that family involvement gives the recording its particular quality. He reads his father’s sentences with the patience of someone who helped shape them, which matters across a listen this long. The book sits comfortably in both health and personal development, and it rewards a slow pace rather than a single sitting.

Come to it if you have found conventional wellness writing thin. It goes considerably deeper. The audiobook waits below, alongside anything else of his we carry.
