Who is George R.R. Martin?

George R. R. Martin, born in 1948, is an American author, screenwriter and television producer, and the creator of the epic fantasy sequence A Song of Ice and Fire – the novels behind HBO’s Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon. His related novellas, the Tales of Dunk and Egg, have also reached the screen as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

In 2005, Time’s Lev Grossman famously called him “the American Tolkien”, and in 2011 the magazine placed him among the hundred most influential people in the world. His imagination has ranged well beyond his own saga: he helped create the long-running Wild Cards anthology series and contributed worldbuilding to the video game Elden Ring. A long-time resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, he has put some of his success back into the city, helping to fund Meow Wolf and owning the Jean Cocteau Cinema.
