Who is Guy Martin?

There is nobody quite like Guy Martin in British sport, largely because he never wholly agreed to be in it. Born in Grimsby on 4 November 1981, he left school for a job as a heavy vehicle mechanic and has stubbornly kept that trade ever since, refusing to give up the workshop for full time racing or television.

He began racing in 1998 and first rode the Isle of Man TT in 2004, going on to collect seventeen podium finishes there without ever taking a win, a record that turned him into something more interesting than a champion. He broke his back twice, at the 2010 TT and at the Ulster Grand Prix in 2015, and retired from motorcycle racing in 2017.

Television found him and could not quite tame him. Speed with Guy Martin and the Our Guy In travel films made a national figure of a man who talks at the pace of a running engine and would rather discuss a gearbox than himself.

His latest, All the Medals Have Been Handed Out, arrived in 2026 and is the most recent instalment of a life he has been telling in books since My Autobiography. This one takes in road races across the world, TT podiums, world record attempts, a Colombian trip that went badly wrong, an Arctic stint with the Royal Marines and the usual inventory of breaks and sprains.

What holds it together is the same thing that holds his television together: an absolute lack of interest in polish. He is a mechanic who races, not a celebrity who tinkers, and the book keeps its hands dirty.
