Who is Ian Rankin?

Sir Ian Rankin, born in Fife in 1960, is a Scottish crime writer and philanthropist whose novels form a major contribution to the genre now known as tartan noir. The first of his family to go to university, he worked a variety of jobs before turning to writing – a slow road that ended in one of British crime fiction’s great careers.

The spine of that career is Inspector Rebus. The series began with Knots and Crosses in 1987 – later named the eighth-best Scottish novel of all time in a 2016 poll – and the Rebus books have gone on to sell more than 35 million copies, collecting numerous domestic and international awards along the way.
