Who is Jack Whitehall?

Jack Whitehall, born in 1988, is an English comedian, actor and writer who has rarely been off British screens since his early twenties. Sitcom audiences know him as JP in Channel 4’s Fresh Meat and as Alfie Wickers in BBC Three’s Bad Education – a show he also co-wrote, along with its film spin-off – while panel-show viewers had him for six years as a regular on A League of Their Own. He has hosted the BRIT Awards repeatedly, a job that demands nerve above nearly everything else.

Stand-up is where it began: his first show, at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, brought a Best Newcomer nomination at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, and five touring shows have followed. Since 2017 he has also starred opposite his own father, Michael, in the Netflix series Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father – a double act that has become central to his public image.

Which brings us neatly to our catalogue: How to Survive Family Holidays. From a comedian whose Netflix series sent him travelling with his own father, the subject could hardly be more on-brand – this is comic territory Whitehall has tested at length, at close range and on camera.

Comedians’ books flourish in audio because the material keeps the shape of the stage, and family holidays may be the most universal of British comic subjects: everyone has endured one, and everyone has stories. For listeners after something genuinely light – a motorway laugh, a poolside listen – How to Survive Family Holidays sits squarely in the sweet spot.
