Who is James Patterson?

James Patterson, born in 1947, is an American author and, by the brute numbers, one of the most successful the world has seen: more than 425 million copies sold, the first person to sell a million e-books, and top of Forbes’s list of highest-paid authors for a third consecutive year in 2016, with an income of 95 million dollars that year and an estimated 700 million across the decade.

The engine behind those numbers is series fiction on an industrial scale – Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women’s Murder Club, Maximum Ride, Daniel X, NYPD Red, Witch and Wizard, Private, Middle School – alongside standalone thrillers, non-fiction and romance. Less noticed is the philanthropy: the National Book Foundation gave him its Literarian Award in 2015, and he has donated millions in grants and scholarships to universities, teachers’ colleges, independent bookstores, school libraries and students, all in the service of literacy.

James Patterson in audiobooks

Patterson sells in the hundreds of millions for a reason: his thrillers are built for momentum, and momentum is exactly what audio rewards. Trapped is the Patterson title in our catalogue – a thriller from a writer whose series and standalones have made him a fixture of bestseller lists the world over. He suits commutes and long journeys, where the pull of the next chapter does the heavy lifting, and he asks nothing of the listener except that they keep going – which, reliably, they do. UK listeners will find him the definition of a safe pair of hands: whatever one makes of the scale of the Patterson operation, the machine does not stall.
