Jean Adamson (1928 to 2024) was a British writer and illustrator of children’s books, and the name behind one of the most durable fixtures of British childhood: Topsy and Tim. The first book appeared in 1960, and the series went on to sell 27 million copies – numbers very few children’s writers ever see.

Her creations travelled beyond the page too, featuring widely on television across 84 episodes of Topsy and Tim. That she was both writer and illustrator gave the books a single, coherent vision, and several generations of British children have now grown up in her company.
