Jim Butcher, born in 1971, is an American author working in fantasy. He is the writer behind three separate series – the contemporary fantasy of The Dresden Files, plus Codex Alera and Cinder Spires – which marks him out as a series novelist through and through: a builder of worlds designed to be returned to rather than visited once.
Little else needs embroidering, and honesty serves him better than hype: Butcher is a working genre novelist whose stock in trade is sustained storytelling – recurring characters, escalating stakes, momentum kept up across many volumes. It is The Dresden Files, the series that heads that list, that brings him into our catalogue.
