Who is Jonathan Lethem?

Jonathan Lethem (born 19 February 1964) is an American novelist, essayist and short story writer who has spent a career cheerfully refusing to stay in one genre. His debut, Gun, with Occasional Music (1994), spliced science fiction with detective fiction; five years later Motherless Brooklyn won the National Book Critics Circle Award and carried him into the mainstream, and The Fortress of Solitude (2003) became a New York Times bestseller.

The honours have kept pace with the books: a MacArthur Fellowship in 2005 and, in 2025, a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction, among the most coveted recognitions in the American arts. Since 2011 he has taught creative writing at Pomona College – the rare stylist willing to explain how the trick is done.
