Who is Lucy Maud Montgomery?

Lucy Maud Montgomery, born in 1874 and published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author and one of the most enduringly loved writers her country has produced. Her fame arrived in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables, whose orphan heroine, Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her own lifetime and won her an international following.

She was formidably prolific: 20 novels, more than a thousand short stories and poems, and a substantial body of essays, with most of the novels set on Prince Edward Island. So completely did she map that landscape that its locations became literary landmarks – Green Gables farm was the genesis of Prince Edward Island National Park – and by her death in 1942 she had fixed Canada’s smallest province permanently in readers’ imaginations.

Nor has her work ever left the scholars’ desks: her novels, diaries and letters are read and studied worldwide, with a dedicated institute at the University of Prince Edward Island devoted to her life and influence.

This catalogue carries Anne of Green Gables, and few classics reward listening so richly. It is the kind of story made to be shared aloud – passed between generations, read at bedsides – and audio restores that original mode: the voice of its orphan heroine, the island setting and the charm that made it an immediate success in 1908 all bloom when spoken.

For UK listeners it is family listening in the truest sense: gentle enough for children, sharp enough for the adults in the front seats, and the reason generations of readers dream of Prince Edward Island without ever having been. A cornerstone of any classics shelf, and one of the happiest ways in.
