Who is Mark Beaumont?

Mark Beaumont is an English cyclist, adventurer, broadcaster and documentary maker, born in Swindon in 1983. He belongs to a very British tradition: the endurance athlete who can also tell the story, turning vast physical undertakings into books and broadcasts for the rest of us, who will be attempting no such thing.

Cycling is his medium, and scale is his signature. Where most travel writers move at walking pace, Beaumont works at the size of continents, and the broadcaster’s training shows in how the adventures are shaped – not raw feats, but narratives with a beginning, a middle and a finish line.

Around the World in 80 Days is his book in our catalogue, and the title – with its knowing nod to Jules Verne – describes the premise plainly enough: a man, a bicycle and the whole planet against the clock. In audio it becomes a companionable epic; there is a pleasing symmetry in listening to an account of relentless forward motion while in motion yourself, and Beaumont’s documentary instincts keep the story moving at pace. For UK listeners who like their armchair adventure with real sweat in it, this is an easy recommendation – the ride is immense, and the telling knows exactly where it is going.
