Matthew McConaughey, born in Uvalde, Texas in 1969, is an Oscar-winning American actor whose career divides neatly into three acts: the breakout in Dazed and Confused, a long stretch as the reigning star of the romantic comedy, and then the deliberate reinvention that critics christened the McConaissance. Few actors have redirected a career so visibly in public.
That third act produced The Lincoln Lawyer, Mud, True Detective, Interstellar and, in 2013, Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has since taught at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is a professor of practice in the Moody College of Communication.
He is also, by his own account, a lifelong diarist. He has kept journals since he was a teenager, filling boxes with notes, letters, poems and what he calls bumper stickers, and it was those boxes, carried off to a desert cabin for a month of reading, that eventually became his book.
