Michael Connelly, born in 1956, is an American crime writer and one of the undisputed heavyweights of the modern detective novel. He is the creator of LAPD detective Harry Bosch and the criminal defence attorney Mickey Haller – characters whose paths cross in ten of his books – and his work spans 42 novels, more than 74 million copies sold and translations into some 40 languages.
The quality was there from the start: his debut, The Black Echo, won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 1992. Hollywood noticed too. Clint Eastwood directed and starred in the 2002 adaptation of Blood Work, and Matthew McConaughey played Haller in the 2011 film of The Lincoln Lawyer. Connelly has also served as President of the Mystery Writers of America – a mark of his standing within the genre he has helped to define.
