Nigel Slater (born 1956) is an English food writer, journalist and broadcaster, and for a generation of British readers simply the food writer: the one whose recipes actually get cooked and whose prose gets read for pleasure. His home has long been The Observer, where he has written a column for The Observer Magazine for more than a decade and serves as principal writer for the Observer Food Monthly supplement.
Before the Observer years came five as food writer for Marie Claire, and the magazine training shows in everything he does: economy, warmth and an unerring eye for the detail that makes a dish – or a memory – come alive. Few writers in any genre are so completely identified with a particular register: domestic, unhurried and quietly precise.
