Peter Levenda has spent half a century in the archives where history and the irrational overlap. Born in 1950 or 1951 and educated at Florida International University, he is an American writer whose subject is occult influence on politics: secret societies, intelligence agencies, mind-control programmes and the long tail of Nazi mysticism.
His breakthrough was Unholy Alliance, a study of esoteric belief inside the Third Reich that has stayed in print for decades and is cited well beyond the fringe. What sets him apart from most writers on that shelf is method. He footnotes, he travels, he reads the primary documents, and he is notably more cautious than his readers about the conclusions his own material invites.
He is something of a mystery himself. He has been named as the author behind the pseudonymous Simon Necronomicon, a claim he has consistently denied, and the argument has trailed him for years. It is an oddly fitting biography for a writer whose entire subject is what hides behind a name.
