Sir Philip Pullman, born in 1946, is an English writer and one of the defining storytellers of his generation. He is best known for the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials: its opening volume, Northern Lights (1995), won the Carnegie Medal and was later crowned the Carnegie of Carnegies, while the closing volume, The Amber Spyglass (2000), took the Whitbread Award. In 2017 he began a companion trilogy, The Book of Dust, which reached its conclusion with The Rose Field in October 2025.

He was knighted in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to literature and has gathered honorary doctorates along the way. Children’s Literature Laureate Michael Morpurgo judged that the range and depth of Pullman’s imagination and learning make him the Tolkien of our day – large praise, and not obviously wrong.
