Pimsleur Audiobooks

Pimsleur is less an author than a method – but behind the method stands a man. Paul Pimsleur (1927 to 1976) was a French-American linguist and scholar of applied linguistics, and the language learning system that bears his name grew directly out of that academic work. Together with his many publications, it had a significant effect on theories of how languages are taught and learnt.

He founded Pimsleur Language Programs, and the courses produced under that banner have carried his approach far beyond the lecture theatre. The premise is distinctive: language absorbed through the ear and the mouth rather than the textbook, one structured audio lesson at a time – which makes Pimsleur one of the few names on this site that was, in effect, born for the audiobook format.
