Roger Hargreaves, born in 1935, was an English cartoonist, illustrator and writer of children’s books, and the creator of three series: Mr. Men, Little Miss and Timbuctoo. He died in 1988, but the work has scarcely paused for breath since: the books have sold more than 85 million copies worldwide, in 20 languages.
The formula was deceptively simple – short, humorous stories for young readers, carried by bold, brightly coloured illustrations. Simplicity at that level is far harder than it looks, as generations of imitators have discovered, and Hargreaves belongs to the small company of children’s authors whose characters have long since outgrown the books that contain them.
