The Tutor: an actor turned novelist writes a revenge thriller with real teeth

Who is Rosie Day?

Screen actors who turn to writing usually produce a memoir. Rosie Day produced a one woman show, then a book, then a psychological thriller, which suggests a rather different set of ambitions. Born in the mid nineties, she has been working since childhood, and British audiences will know her as Mary Hawkins in Outlander, as Tina in Sky’s Living the Dream, and from films including The Seasoning House and Down a Dark Hall.

Her writing began in the theatre. Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon started life as a solo stage piece about grief, sisterhood and the particular indignities of being sixteen, and was published as a book in 2021. She is an ambassador for stem4, a charity working on teenage mental health, and the subject matter has never been incidental to her.

She is a playwright and filmmaker as well as a performer, which shows in how she writes: scenes that land, dialogue built to be spoken aloud, and a very sharp instinct for where to cut.

Rosie Day in audiobooks

The Tutor is Day’s first crime novel and it arrives as an Audible original, which means it was built for the ear rather than adapted for it. Eloise Hart returns to the secondary school where she was once taught by Jack Collins, and she has not come back for a reunion. What follows is a study of power, consent and how easily a young heart can be steered.

Alex Hassell leads the narration opposite Mia McKenna-Bruce, and the pairing is deliberate: two voices circling the same events, neither of them entirely safe to trust. Ten hours pass at a clip.

Newly arrived and still finding its audience, it is the sort of thriller best taken in as few sittings as you can manage. Find it below.
