Timothy Zahn, born in 1951, is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy with an unusual claim attached to his name: his Star Wars novels, above all the Thrawn trilogy, have been credited with helping revive interest in the entire franchise at a time when its film branch was struggling for profitability and a new generation of fans. Licensed fiction rarely earns that kind of historical footnote; Zahn’s did.
He grew up in Lombard, Illinois, attended Michigan State University and worked towards a doctorate in physics at the University of Illinois before writing took over. Alongside the Star Wars books he has published several series of his own original invention, plus a substantial body of short fiction – a prolific career, though one character has come to define it.
