Who is William Hope Hodgson?

William Hope Hodgson was an English author, born in 1877, who packed an extraordinary amount into a short life. He produced a large body of essays, short fiction and novels across overlapping genres – horror, fantastic fiction and early science fiction – and drew directly on his own years at sea to give his ocean-set horror stories their unnerving authenticity, most famously in the linked tales known as the Sargasso Sea Stories.

His novels reach further out. The House on the Borderland (1908) and The Night Land (1912) work on a cosmic scale, though the sea kept pulling him back, and several of his longer works root their horrors in deep water. Early in his writing career he devoted real effort to poetry, little of it published in his lifetime, and he found separate renown as a photographer and a bodybuilder – not a standard literary CV by any measure. He was killed in the First World War in 1918, aged just 40.

Our catalogue carries Men of the Deep Waters, and it is exactly where a newcomer should meet Hodgson: at sea, where his imagination did its most distinctive work. Maritime horror is a natural fit for audio – the creak, the isolation, the things half-glimpsed off the bow – and stories written by a man who actually worked those waters carry a texture no landlocked imitator quite manages.

Listeners who like their unease slow and atmospheric rather than cheaply jolting will find Hodgson a genuinely rewarding discovery: a writer who died young, worked prolifically, and left behind some of the strangest sea stories in English.
