Who is Allen Levi?

A lawyer for thirteen years, then a touring songwriter, then a novelist at a stage when most careers have long since settled. Allen Levi has taken his time. Born in Bay Minette, Alabama, he took his degree at the University of Georgia, practised law through the 1980s, and then went to the University of Edinburgh to study fiction, which is not the usual exit from a legal practice.

The years that followed were spent on the road as a singer-songwriter, much of it performing for Young Life, with the writing fitted around it. Oliviatown appeared in 2003, The Last Sweet Mile in 2014, and Theo of Golden in 2023, the last of them self-published and sold, at first, more or less by hand.

What happened next is the sort of story publishing likes to pretend is common. Word of mouth carried the novel, an agent took it on, a major house followed, and in March 2026 it spent three weeks at number one on the New York Times list, two decades after his first book.

Theo of Golden is the novel that brought him here, and it is worth knowing what sort of book it is before you press play: gentle, southern, unhurried, following an elderly stranger who arrives in a small town and begins buying portraits from a local gallery, one at a time, quietly altering the people he meets along the way.

It has drawn an enormous number of listener ratings and a warm average with them, which for a book that began life self-published is remarkable in itself. It is not a thriller and makes no attempt to be. The pleasure lies in the accumulation of small decencies, and it rewards anyone who loves the kinder end of literary fiction.
