Some books only work in the author’s own voice, and this is plainly one of them. Mr Wilman’s Motoring Adventure lands across four of our shelves, entertainment, memoir, engineering and the great outdoors, and that scatter is fair warning that Andy Wilman has not written a technical manual about cars.
The motoring book at its best is really a book about appetite: for machines, for distance, for the particular comedy of things going wrong a long way from home. Written in the first person and delivered as an adventure rather than a survey, this belongs to that tradition, where the vehicle is the excuse and the story is everything happening around it.
