Who is Anthony Trollope?

Anthony Trollope (1815 to 1882) was an English novelist of the Victorian era who produced 47 novels while holding down a career as a civil servant – a work rate that still beggars belief. He is best remembered for two six-novel sequences, the Chronicles of Barsetshire and the Palliser novels, and for The Way We Live Now, and his fiction engaged head-on with the political, social and gender questions of his day.

The novels were only part of it: he also wrote an autobiography, books on William Makepeace Thackeray and Lord Palmerston, five travel books and 42 short stories. His reputation sagged in his final years, but by the mid-20th century readers had found their way back to him, and he has been quietly beloved ever since.

Anthony Trollope in audiobooks

Victorian fiction is a gift to audiobook listeners – long, roomy novels that reward a daily habit – and Trollope is among the most companionable writers of the age. Our catalogue includes Can You Forgive Her?, a fine showcase for what he did best: politics, society and the constrained choices facing women, handled with worldly sympathy rather than sermonising.

For UK listeners there is a simple pleasure in hearing Victorian England observed by one of its sharpest insiders – a novelist who was also a working civil servant, and knew the machinery of the country from the inside. Give it a long commute or two; Trollope repays patience like few others.
