Who is Antony Beevor?

Sir Antony Beevor (born 14 December 1946) is a British military historian, and few living writers have done more to bring the Second World War to general readers. His training was practical before it was academic: educated at Winchester College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he commanded a troop of tanks with the 11th Hussars in Germany before leaving the army in 1970 to write. He has since worked mainly on the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War, turning most recently to the Russian Revolution and Civil War.

His bestsellers Stalingrad (1998) and Berlin: The Downfall 1945 (2002) were acclaimed for their detail and, crucially, for their focus on the experiences of ordinary people caught in the machinery of war – Berlin proving fiercely controversial in Russia for what it drew from former Soviet archives about the Red Army’s mass rapes in 1945. Translated into many languages, his books have sold millions of copies.

Our catalogue offers both the panorama and the close-up: The Second World War, the conflict he has spent a career mastering rendered as a single sweep, and Rasputin, which reaches into the Russian territory his recent work has explored. Beevor’s signature – archival depth carried by the voices of ordinary soldiers and civilians – survives the move to audio remarkably well; if anything, hearing those testimonies spoken aloud sharpens them.

For UK listeners these are serious, immersive commitments and worth every hour: history with the sweep of fiction and none of its consolations. Start with The Second World War for the full picture, and expect to come out the other side knowing why his reputation stands where it does.
