Who is Blaise Aguera y Arcas?

Blaise Aguera y Arcas, born in 1975, is an American artificial intelligence researcher, software engineer and author, and one of the more interesting minds working where technology meets everything else. He is a vice president and fellow at Google, where he serves as CTO of Technology & Society and leads the Paradigms of Intelligence team on basic AI research. His technical record includes work on on-device machine learning and the invention of federated learning; before Google, he was the architect of Bing Maps and Bing Mobile at Microsoft.

He is unusual among senior technologists in taking art and ideas seriously. In 2016 he founded Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence programme, pairing engineers with artists, and alongside scientific papers, essays and TED Talks he has written a run of books: Ubi Sunt, Who Are We Now?, What Is Life? and What Is Intelligence?
