Who is Brandon Sanderson?

Fantasy did not claim Brandon Sanderson until he was a teenager, converted by a single borrowed novel after years of finding school reading dull. Born in Nebraska in 1975, he studied and later taught creative writing at Brigham Young University, published Elantris in 2005, and within two years had been handed one of the most daunting commissions in the genre: finishing The Wheel of Time after Robert Jordan’s death, a task he completed across three volumes.

What distinguishes him is engineering. Sanderson builds magic as a system with costs, limits and consequences, then lets his plots turn on those rules rather than on convenient miracles. Almost all of his adult fantasy takes place in the Cosmere, a single connected cosmos in which separate series quietly rhyme with one another, and the pleasure for long term listeners lies in spotting the joins.

He is also, by some distance, the most productive major novelist working in fantasy, and his 2022 crowdfunding campaign for four secret novels became the largest in Kickstarter’s history.

Brandon Sanderson in audiobooks

Start with The Way of Kings. It opens the Stormlight Archive, the sequence that dominates his shelf here, and its sequel Words of Radiance carries the highest rating of anything he has with us. From there the road runs through Oathbringer, Rhythm of War and Wind and Truth, with the shorter Edgedancer and Dawnshard slotting in between as novellas that genuinely matter to the plot.

If fifty hour epics are not where you want to begin, Mistborn is the better door: a heist story with a magic system built on ingested metals, followed here by The Hero of Ages and the later The Lost Metal. Michael Kramer narrates that strand; Kate Reading carries Stormlight. Younger listeners have ReDawn from the Skyward Flight novellas, read by Suzy Jackson.

Whichever thread you pull, the audiobooks below will take you deeper into the Cosmere than you expect.
