Scale is the first thing you notice with Carter Woods. Miles from Mercy and Failing Light each run well past a day of continuous audio, because this is survival fiction that wants to show the slow grind rather than the dramatic collapse.

The territory is post-apocalyptic. The grid fails, the ordinary supports of modern life go with it, and people who were prepared for nothing have to become people who are. Miles from Mercy starts with troubled teenagers sent into the woods for a wilderness programme and an EMP that turns the exercise into something else entirely.

The writing is practical-minded, closer to procedural thriller than to speculative fiction despite the scattering of genre labels attached to it. Competence, rationing and bad decisions under pressure are the recurring subjects.

Cheryl May narrates both titles, which gives them a consistent voice and makes them feel like companion listens rather than unrelated books. Each is long enough to occupy a week of commutes on its own.
