Who is Charlie Webster?

Sheffield born and Newcastle educated, with a degree in language and linguistics, Charlie Webster began in television presenting for Real Madrid TV and built a career across ESPN, Sky Sports, ITV4 and BoxNation, covering football, boxing, motorsport, triathlon and the Olympic Games. She was born in 1982.

In 2016 she cycled three thousand miles from London to Rio to raise money for charity, contracted malaria and three other tropical illnesses on the way, and was given a day to live. She survived a brain haemorrhage, kidney failure and a coma, and had to learn to walk again. She has campaigned ever since on malaria, on mental health and on domestic and sexual abuse, as an ambassador for Women’s Aid and Malaria No More.

That combination, a reporter’s discipline and a genuine curiosity about why people do harm, is what she has carried into long form audio journalism, where she now works as much as an investigator as a presenter.

SPLBERG is her own reporting rather than a book read aloud. In the late nineties a young man named Jonathan Taylor Spielberg persuaded an entire Catholic high school in suburban Virginia that he was the film director’s nephew. He was believed, thoroughly, for a very long time.

Webster hosts and produced it, and the series is built the way good true crime should be: former classmates, detectives and lawyers, and the man himself, all given room to contradict one another. It runs a little over five hours across eight parts, which is a tidy weekend rather than a commitment, and it is filed here under crime and thriller.

It is a recent arrival and still gathering its first listeners, which makes it a good one to get to early. You will find it below.
