Who is Chris van Tulleken?

Chris van Tulleken, born in 1978, is a British physician, academic, writer and television presenter – known to a fair chunk of the country simply as Dr Chris. He is the identical twin of Xand van Tulleken, whose career in global and public health has run along similar lines, and the pair have jointly presented programmes including The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs, the children’s series Operation Ouch! and the podcast A Thorough Examination.

His investigation of dietary causes of disease produced Ultra-Processed People, a Sunday Times best-seller – the moment his work jumped from the television schedules into the national conversation about what we actually eat.

That book anchors his presence in our catalogue, and Ultra-Processed People is the sort of audiobook that quietly ruins a trip down the supermarket aisle – in the best possible way. Van Tulleken brings a practising doctor’s authority to a subject every UK household has a stake in, and the broadcasting experience shows: this is a communicator who knows how to hold an audience without dumbing anything down. It pairs disturbingly well with the weekly shop or the kitchen radio slot. Expect to finish it reading ingredient labels with fresh suspicion, which is presumably exactly what the doctor ordered.
