Who is Duncan Ferguson?

Duncan Ferguson, born in 1971, is a Scottish football manager and former striker whose playing career supplied enough drama for several. He began at Dundee United in 1990, moved to Rangers in 1993 for a British record transfer fee, then spent the rest of his career in England, most of it across two spells at Everton – where he won the FA Cup in 1995 – either side of a stint at Newcastle United. No Scottish player has scored more goals in the Premier League since its creation in 1992.

The rough edges are part of the legend. Nicknamed ‘Big Dunc’ and ‘Duncan Disorderly’, he collected nine red cards – eight in the Premier League, where he still shares the record for dismissals – and served a three-month prison sentence for an on-field assault in 1994. Capped seven times by Scotland, he played at Euro 92 before withdrawing from international selection in 1997 over a dispute with the Scottish Football Association. Since retiring in 2006 he has coached at Everton, twice as caretaker manager, then managed Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Duncan Ferguson in audiobooks

A footballer’s story lives or dies on whether the life needs embellishment, and Ferguson’s plainly does not. Our catalogue carries BIG DUNC, the book that takes his famous nickname for a title, and the raw material is extraordinary by any standard: a record fee, an FA Cup, a prison cell, a self-imposed international exile and a second act in the dugout.

In audio it is one for the terraces and the commute alike: Evertonians will come for the club years, Rangers and Dundee United followers for the beginnings, and neutrals for the sheer turbulence of the tale. It is that rare football story where the myth and the record book agree.
