Who is Florence Knapp?

Before The Names, Florence Knapp wrote about quilts. Her first book documented a centuries-old English method of patchwork, and she contributed to a title for the Victoria and Albert Museum, which is not the usual apprenticeship for a novelist but turns out to be a useful one. Piecing, after all, is the art of making a whole from fragments that were never meant to fit.

She is British, lives just outside London with her husband and their dog, and published a first novel in 2025 after years of writing quietly around other work. It became a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic, a Read with Jenna pick, and is being translated into more than thirty languages. The Sunday Times called it the best debut novel in years, a sentence publishers dream of and seldom earn.

What she does exceptionally well is patience. She trusts a domestic detail to carry an entire emotional argument, and never raises her voice to make a point.

The Names opens in the storm of October 1987. Cora walks to the register office with her newborn son and a choice: Gordon, after the husband who frightens her, or Bear, as her small daughter suggests, or Julian, the name she actually wants. The novel then follows all three versions of that boy across thirty-five years.

A structure that could easily have been a gimmick is instead devastating, because the three lives rhyme rather than diverge neatly. Dervla Kirwan reads it, and her control over the shifts between timelines is what makes the audio edition the one to choose. Tens of thousands of listeners have rated it above four stars.
