Who is Gyles Brandreth?

Gyles Brandreth, born in 1948, is a British broadcaster and writer whose CV reads like several careers stacked on top of one another: television presenter, theatre producer, journalist, author, publisher and, for one parliamentary term, politician. He presented on TV-am’s Good Morning Britain in the 1980s, has long been a regular on Channel 4’s Countdown and the BBC’s The One Show, and on radio is a familiar voice on Radio 4’s Just a Minute.

The political chapter is real and complete: elected Conservative MP for the City of Chester in 1992, he served in the House of Commons until defeat at the 1997 general election, whereupon he went straight back to the media. Since then the output has continued on all fronts – fiction, non-fiction and a busy sideline as a public speaker.
