Hanya Yanagihara, born in 1974, is an American novelist, editor and travel writer who grew up in Hawaii. She leads a striking double life in letters: alongside her fiction she is editor-in-chief of T Magazine, placing her at the centre of American cultural journalism.
Her name was made by A Little Life, the bestselling novel that was shortlisted for the 2015 Booker Prize and became one of the most discussed literary novels of its decade. Few contemporary writers inspire such devotion from their readers – or such intense debate about the experience of reading them.
