Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall, who published as H. E. Marshall, was a Scottish writer born in 1867. She made her name telling nations their own stories: history for children, written to be read for pleasure, with the sweep and colour of a tale rather than the dryness of a textbook.

Her defining work is Our Island Story, published in 1905 and issued abroad as An Island Story: A Child’s History of England.
