Weddings and baby groups: settings where everyone is smiling and nobody is quite telling the truth. Jade Lee Wright works that seam, and the titles listed with us name it so precisely that the genre scarcely needs stating.

Both books are filed under crime and thriller, and under the domestic strand of it in particular, where the threat is not a stranger in an alley but the person handing round the biscuits. The form is built on proximity. A reader is asked to distrust exactly the people the characters cannot afford to distrust.

Different narrators, a single register, and full-length running times on each. That consistency is worth something when deciding where to spend an evening.

The Wedding Lies is by far the more widely rated of the two, with thousands of verdicts behind a solid average, and that alone makes it the sensible starting point. Olivia Darnley narrates, across a shade under ten hours.

The Baby Group follows at around eight and a half hours, read by Tamaryn Payne. It is much newer to our shelves and the score attached to it rests on almost nothing, so let the premise decide that one rather than the figure.
