Jo Marchant is an English freelance journalist and author specialising in the fertile ground where science meets history. She brings proper scientific credentials to the work – a BSc in genetics from the University of Leicester, followed by a PhD in genetics – which lends her writing an authority that a good deal of science journalism has to borrow.
Working freelance rather than from a single staff desk, she has made that dual specialism her signature: a writer trained in the laboratory but drawn to the long view, asking how we came to know what we think we know.
