Who is John C. Lennox?

Few writers arrive at theology by way of group theory. John C. Lennox was born in Northern Ireland in 1943 and built his first career in pure mathematics, taking a doctorate at Cambridge and adding further doctorates at Oxford and Cardiff. He is now emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College.

The second career grew out of the first. Lennox writes as a scientist who is also a Christian, and books such as Has Science Buried God? and Can Science Explain Everything? argue the case in public rather than from behind a lectern. He has debated Richard Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens, and has taught at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. His manner in those exchanges is courteous, unhurried and remarkably hard to rattle.

What makes him worth an audiobook listener’s time is the register. He explains a mathematical idea and a scriptural one in the same patient, plainspoken voice, and he assumes his listener is intelligent rather than already persuaded.

With us, Lennox is represented by God, AI and the End of History, an ambitious book that sets the rise of intelligent machines beside the Book of Revelation. It is his most speculative subject to date, and it draws on a strand of thinking that has circled artificial intelligence for several years.

John Lescault reads it, and the choice suits the material: a steady, unshowy delivery that lets a dense argument unfold without theatrics. Listeners have rated it warmly, which is telling for a title that asks real concentration of them.

Begin here if you want Lennox at full stretch on the question he considers the defining one of the decade. If the pace suits you, his shorter works of apologetics make natural follow-on listening. Browse the audiobooks below to start.
