Who is John Grisham?

John Grisham (born 1955) is an American writer, lawyer and former politician, and the undisputed brand name in legal thrillers. The numbers need no embellishment: 37 consecutive number one fiction bestsellers, some 300 million copies sold worldwide, and membership of a club of just three English-language authors – alongside Tom Clancy and J.K. Rowling – to have sold two million copies on a first printing.

The law came first, and it shows. Grisham took his law degree at the University of Mississippi in 1981, practised criminal law for about a decade and served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990. His debut, A Time to Kill, appeared in 1989; his breakthrough, The Firm, sold more than seven million copies and became the Tom Cruise film. Hollywood has since worked steadily through the shelf – The Client, The Pelican Brief, The Rainmaker and more – which tells you how naturally his storytelling travels.
