Who is Jon Ronson?

Born in Cardiff in 1967, Jon Ronson made his name by walking into rooms most journalists would rather leave. Conspiracists, extremists, army officers convinced they could kill a goat by staring at it: he arrives as the nervous, faintly bewildered figure in the corner and lets the strangeness declare itself.

That method produced Them: Adventures with Extremists, The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Psychopath Test, the last of which spent close to two years on the UK bestseller lists. He has written for the Guardian, made documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4, and over the past decade has become one of the defining voices in narrative audio, with a run of Audible series that treat the form as storytelling rather than as a book read aloud.

What holds the work together is moral curiosity. Ronson is fascinated by how ordinary people end up on the wrong side of a story, and he is unusually reluctant to hand down a verdict on them.

Ronson reads his own work, and that matters more with him than with almost anyone, because the hesitations and the dry timing are part of the reporting. So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, his study of internet pile-ons and the people flattened by them, is the strongest place to begin with us and the most warmly received.

The Debutante, the Audible series that won a Signal Gold award, brings his true crime instincts to a stranger and sadder story, while The Castle follows a chain of messages from his own son to a house in the New England woods and the unravelling men inside it.

Take the shaming first, then the newer investigations as they land. The audiobooks below will show you exactly what is available today.
