Who is Laura Bates?

Laura Bates, born in 1986, is an English feminist writer who came to prominence as the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, the website she launched in April 2012. The project made her one of the most recognisable feminist voices in Britain, and its premise – that sexism is a daily texture, not just a headline event – has shaped her writing ever since.

Her first book, Everyday Sexism, appeared in 2014, carrying the project’s concerns into long-form argument. She has continued writing in the years since, and her work sits squarely in the tradition of British feminist writing that treats the ordinary, unglamorous instance as the real battleground – the place where attitudes are actually formed and can actually be changed.

Laura Bates in audiobooks

Bates writes to be argued with, discussed and acted upon, and audio lends her arguments a directness the page cannot quite match. The New Age of Sexism is her title in our catalogue, and the name announces the project: tracking how sexism adapts to new terrain rather than obligingly disappearing. Her method, signalled from the Everyday Sexism days onwards, is to keep the focus on how these forces are actually lived, and that concreteness is what carries listeners through difficult material. For UK listeners who want contemporary feminist writing addressed to this country’s culture, Bates is an essential, sometimes uncomfortable, always clarifying listen.
