Lucy Worsley, born in 1973, is that rare thing: a proper historian who is also a genuine broadcasting star. She served as joint chief curator at Historic Royal Palaces from 2003 to 2024, and she is best known to UK audiences as the presenter of history series on BBC Television and Channel 5 – alongside her parallel lives as author, curator and podcaster.
The combination is the point. Worsley’s on-screen manner – curious, mischievous, faintly conspiratorial – rests on real curatorial authority, and her books share exactly that character: scholarship worn lightly, delivered by someone who plainly finds the past far too interesting to be solemn about it.
