Who is Maggie Haberman?

Maggie Haberman has spent her professional life on one beat and, for the past decade, largely on one subject. Born in New York in 1973 into a newspaper family, she came up through the New York Post, the Daily News and Politico before joining The New York Times, where she is a White House correspondent. She is also a political analyst for CNN.

She had been covering Donald Trump as a New York figure long before he was a national one, which is the source of her particular advantage: a contact book built over many years, and an ear for what the man himself, rather than his spokespeople, is actually saying. She shared in the Times team’s Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2018.

Her first book, Confidence Man, appeared in 2022 and set the template: no editorialising, an enormous quantity of sourcing, and a preference for letting the reported scene make the argument.

Regime Change, written with Jonathan Swan, is the account of the first year of Trump’s second presidency, built on hundreds of interviews and on reporting from rooms that were meant to stay closed. It takes the listener into the Situation Room and the Oval Office as the administration made the decisions that have defined the term so far, and it went straight to the top of the American bestseller lists.

Robert Petkoff narrates, and his flat, unshowy delivery is exactly right for it. Seventeen hours is a serious commitment, but the material is reported rather than argued, and it moves.

Of the many books written about this period, it is the one with the deepest access to the room where things were decided. You will find it waiting below.
